Comparison
Spendline vs Helicone
Helicone is an observability platform with a gateway and a cost-based rate limit. Spendline records cost per customer and checks monthly budgets before supported requests.
The buyer situation
You use Helicone for logging and observability, or are reconsidering it after its 2026 ownership changes, and want to know whether you also need per-customer cost and budget checks.
What the alternative already does
Helicone is an open-source observability platform with an AI gateway: request logging, dashboards, sessions, prompt tools and alerts. Its custom rate limits accept a policy header whose unit can be cents, so a cost cap can apply globally, per user or per custom property over a rolling window, returning HTTP 429 when exceeded. When we checked on 23 October 2026, its homepage said Helicone is no longer part of Mintlify, with details to come, so confirm its current roadmap with Helicone.
What Spendline does
- Spendline routes supported AI requests, records attributed costs and applies configured controls. It covers traffic actually routed through it.
- Your application supplies customer, agent and workflow labels with each request; Spendline records them with the priced call in an append-only ledger.
- Spendline checks configured budgets before forwarding supported requests. Strict budgets reject requests whose estimated cost would exceed a limit. Actual response cost can differ from the estimate. Budgets can be set at org, team, agent and customer level.
- Where you share revenue data, Spendline compares customer revenue with attributed AI cost over the same period. Other delivery costs are not included.
Verified differences
Helicone's cost limit is a rolling window per segment. Spendline's budgets are monthly limits per org, team, agent or customer, checked before forwarding, and where you share revenue data Spendline compares each customer's revenue with attributed AI cost. Spendline does not offer prompt-level tracing or evaluation.
| Question | Helicone | Spendline |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Observability with a gateway | Customer cost records, budget checks, revenue comparison |
| Cost limit | Rolling window in cents, global, per user or per custom property; HTTP 429 | Monthly budgets per org, team, agent or customer; strict budgets refuse with HTTP 402 |
| Prompt-level tracing | Yes | Not offered |
| Cost against revenue per customer | Not described in the pages we checked | Where you share revenue data |
| Month-end records | Not described in the pages we checked | Owner month close; invoice-total comparison filed as one adjustment |
| Deployment | Hosted, or self-hosted from the open-source repository | Hosted proxy, not self-hosted |
Where Spendline is unnecessary
If you mainly need request tracing and debugging, and a rolling-window cost cap per user or property is enough control, Helicone may be all you need.
When a Spendline pilot is worth testing
You need monthly budgets that follow your customers and agents, or AI cost compared with customer revenue where you share revenue data.
Integration and coverage limits
- Requests sent directly to a provider, including any direct-provider fallback, and unsupported API shapes are outside Spendline’s controls and records.
- Supported request shapes: /v1/chat/completions (OpenAI, Google Gemini, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, Together AI, Fireworks AI, Groq; streaming: supported); /v1/messages (Anthropic; streaming: supported); /v1/responses (OpenAI; streaming: non-streaming only). Embeddings, images, audio and speech, vector or knowledge-base search, and Google’s native generateContent API are not supported.
- Set customer IDs on your server from authenticated request context. Spendline records the supplied customer ID and server time.
- Spendline is a hosted proxy, not self-hosted, so it adds a network hop to each routed call.
Frequently asked questions
Can Helicone cap spend?
Yes, within a rolling window. Its custom rate limits can use cents as the unit and return HTTP 429 when exceeded. That limits a rate of spend per segment, which is different from a monthly budget per customer or agent.
Should I replace Helicone with Spendline?
Not for tracing. Spendline does not do prompt-level tracing or evaluation, so teams that need both would run an observability tool alongside Spendline.
