Comparison
Spendline vs Langfuse
Langfuse is an open-source tracing and evaluation platform. Spendline sits in the request path to record customer cost and check budgets. They do different jobs.
The buyer situation
You use Langfuse for tracing and evaluation, and finance now asks what each customer costs, or whether spend can be limited before it happens.
What the alternative already does
Langfuse is an open-source (MIT) platform for tracing, prompt management and evaluation that you can self-host. Its homepage says it tracks cost and latency across models and providers, with dashboards and automated alerts. When we checked on 23 October 2026, the homepage showed no change of ownership.
What Spendline does
- Spendline routes supported AI requests, records attributed costs and applies configured controls. It covers traffic actually routed through it.
- Your application supplies customer, agent and workflow labels with each request; Spendline records them with the priced call in an append-only ledger.
- Spendline checks configured budgets before forwarding supported requests. Strict budgets reject requests whose estimated cost would exceed a limit. Actual response cost can differ from the estimate. Budgets can be set at org, team, agent and customer level.
- Where you share revenue data, Spendline compares customer revenue with attributed AI cost over the same period. Other delivery costs are not included.
Verified differences
Langfuse is integrated beside the request path through its SDK, so it observes calls rather than admitting or refusing them; its homepage describes cost tracking and alerts, not spend limits. Spendline sits in the request path for supported routes and checks configured budgets before forwarding. Spendline has no prompt tracing or evaluation.
| Question | Langfuse | Spendline |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Tracing, prompt management, evaluation | Customer cost records, budget checks, revenue comparison |
| Position | Beside the request path (SDK) | In the request path, for supported routes |
| Spend limits | Cost alerts; limits not described in the pages we checked | Strict budgets refuse with HTTP 402; other budgets alert |
| Deployment | Self-hostable, MIT licensed | Hosted proxy; provider keys you add are uploaded and stored encrypted (AES-256-GCM), not self-hosted |
| Cost against revenue per customer | Not described in the pages we checked | Where you share revenue data |
| Month-end records | Not described in the pages we checked | Owner month close; invoice-total comparison filed as one adjustment |
Where Spendline is unnecessary
The need is prompt and response tracing, evaluation, or an open-source stack you host yourself. Spendline does none of those.
When a Spendline pilot is worth testing
You need to check spend before it happens, by customer or agent, or compare AI cost with customer revenue where you share revenue data.
Integration and coverage limits
- Requests sent directly to a provider, including any direct-provider fallback, and unsupported API shapes are outside Spendline’s controls and records.
- Supported request shapes: /v1/chat/completions (OpenAI, Google Gemini, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, Together AI, Fireworks AI, Groq; streaming: supported); /v1/messages (Anthropic; streaming: supported); /v1/responses (OpenAI; streaming: non-streaming only). Embeddings, images, audio and speech, vector or knowledge-base search, and Google’s native generateContent API are not supported.
- Set customer IDs on your server from authenticated request context. Spendline records the supplied customer ID and server time.
- Spendline is a hosted proxy, not self-hosted, so it adds a network hop to each routed call.
Frequently asked questions
Can Langfuse enforce a spending cap?
Its homepage describes cost tracking and alerts. Because it sits beside the request path as an SDK, it is not positioned to refuse a call. Refusing a call before it reaches the provider needs something in the request path.
Do teams run both?
It is reasonable to: Langfuse for prompt-level engineering visibility, Spendline for customer cost records and budget checks. They are not competing for the same job.
Does Spendline self-host like Langfuse does?
No. Spendline is a hosted proxy, not a self-hosted deployment. If self-hosting the whole stack is the requirement, that points toward Langfuse for observability and something like LiteLLM or Cloudflare AI Gateway for routing, not Spendline.

Start with a guided 30-day free pilot on live production traffic. The 30 days start when your traffic flows through Spendline, not at sign-up. We agree the scope, success criteria and paid terms before you start. There is no Spendline subscription fee during the pilot; your model-provider charges still apply.
