Spendline vs LiteLLM

Already using LiteLLM? Start with what you need beyond routing.

LiteLLM supports cost attribution and budget enforcement, including pre-call reservations. A Spendline pilot should establish whether you need a customer-revenue view, where you share revenue data, and a clearer workflow for reviewing budget decisions.

Compare the workflow your team has today with the one you need. If your gateway and reporting already answer those questions, another product may not be necessary.

The buyer situation

You already route model traffic through LiteLLM, or plan to, and someone is asking what each customer costs against what they pay, or how budget refusals get reviewed.

What the alternative already does

LiteLLM is an open-source proxy for many model APIs that you run yourself. Its budget documentation describes budgets for virtual keys, internal users, teams and team members, end customers (the request's user field) and the whole proxy, each with a max_budget and an optional budget_duration. Budget reservation is on by default: LiteLLM estimates a request's maximum cost from max_tokens or the model's limits, reserves it, and rejects the request before it reaches the provider if the reservation would exceed the budget. Budgets need a database-backed deployment.

What Spendline does

  • Spendline routes supported AI requests, records attributed costs and applies configured controls. It covers traffic actually routed through it.
  • Your application supplies customer, agent and workflow labels with each request; Spendline records them with the priced call in an append-only ledger.
  • Spendline checks configured budgets before forwarding supported requests. Strict budgets reject requests whose estimated cost would exceed a limit. Actual response cost can differ from the estimate. Budgets can be set at org, team, agent and customer level.
  • Where you share revenue data, Spendline compares customer revenue with attributed AI cost over the same period. Other delivery costs are not included.

Verified differences

Both check budgets before the call, so that is not the difference to test. The questions below are where the two may differ for your team: whether customer cost is compared with customer revenue for the same period, and how budget decisions are reviewed. The left column is what to check in your own LiteLLM setup; the right column is what Spendline demonstrates today.

Customer costWhether every request sets the end-user (customer) field consistently, and whether your spend reports group by it the way finance needs.Records the x-customer-id your server sends with each routed call. Calls without one land in an unattributed bucket.
Same-period revenue comparisonWhere customer revenue lives today, and how it is joined to LiteLLM spend for the same period.Where you share revenue data (entered by hand or imported as a CSV, one monthly figure per customer), shows revenue minus attributed AI cost for the same period. Other delivery costs are not included.
Budget behaviourWhich key, user, team, team-member and customer budgets you have configured, their budget_duration, and that reservations are on and backed by a database.Org, team, agent and customer budgets, checked before forwarding with in-flight reservations. Strict budgets refuse with HTTP 402; actual response cost can exceed the estimate.
Exception reviewHow a refused request reaches a person today, and who decides whether a customer or agent may go over. Each refusal is recorded with the budget that refused it, and threshold alerts go to Slack or Discord. A recorded exception-approval workflow is not part of this release.
Deployment and compatibilityWhether you self-host LiteLLM, which providers and API shapes you route through it, and whether another proxy can sit in that path.Hosted proxy, not self-hosted. Supports chat completions for OpenAI-compatible providers, Anthropic Messages and non-streaming OpenAI Responses.

Where Spendline is unnecessary

If your gateway and reporting already answer those questions, another product may not be necessary. If you need to self-host the whole stack, LiteLLM fits that requirement and Spendline does not.

When a Spendline pilot is worth testing

Your LiteLLM setup records spend, but nobody can yet compare a customer's AI cost with that customer's revenue for the same period, or review budget decisions by customer and agent without building it yourself.

Integration and coverage limits

  • Requests sent directly to a provider, including any direct-provider fallback, and unsupported API shapes are outside Spendline’s controls and records.
  • Supported request shapes: /v1/chat/completions (OpenAI, Google Gemini, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, Together AI, Fireworks AI, Groq; streaming: supported); /v1/messages (Anthropic; streaming: supported); /v1/responses (OpenAI; streaming: non-streaming only). Embeddings, images, audio and speech, vector or knowledge-base search, and Google’s native generateContent API are not supported.
  • Set customer IDs on your server from authenticated request context. Spendline records the supplied customer ID and server time.
  • Spendline is a hosted proxy, not self-hosted, so it adds a network hop to each routed call.

Frequently asked questions

Does LiteLLM enforce budgets before the call?

Yes. Its documentation describes pre-call budget reservations that reject a request before it reaches the provider when the reservation would exceed the budget.

Can Spendline sit alongside LiteLLM?

It depends on your request path: which API shapes you use and how routing is arranged. We review that on the call. Compatibility depends on the APIs, routing and controls in that path.

Does Spendline self-host like LiteLLM?

No. Spendline is a hosted proxy, not a self-hosted deployment.
